How to choose your first camera drone

How to choose your first camera drone

Weight, camera, controller and budget — the four things that matter most when you buy your first drone, and how today’s DJI line-up fits each kind of flyer.

1. Start with weight

In many countries, drones under 250 g face lighter rules than heavier ones — check what applies where you fly. Light drones are also easier to carry, so they come along more often. The DJI Mini 5 Pro weighs 249.9 g.

2. Match the camera to what you’ll shoot

  • Selfies, travel and quick clips: the palm-sized DJI Neo 2 takes off from your hand and follows you.
  • Learning to fly, family and holidays: the DJI Lito X1 is made for beginners.
  • Serious photos and video in a small drone: the DJI Mini 5 Pro has a 1-inch sensor.
  • Professional image quality: the DJI Mavic 4 Pro carries a Hasselblad camera.

3. Pick the controller

A standard controller such as the DJI RC-N3 uses your phone as the screen. A screen controller like the DJI RC 2 is ready to fly the moment you switch it on and is bright enough for sunny days — many of our bundles let you choose.

4. Budget for flying time

One battery is rarely enough for a real outing. A Fly More Combo adds spare batteries and a charging hub, usually for less than buying them separately — see is a Fly More Combo worth it?
